Celebrating all that it is to be a girl
Did you know that October 11th is the International Day of the Girl? A day to “highlight and address the needs and challenges girls face while promoting girls’ empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights” (United Nations, 2019).
I spent the day with a collection of elite female athletes, women who work in sport and 80 young women at the CBC Toronto Studios. The goal was to empower these young women through our various stories, a variety of activities (thanks Girls Just Wanna Box), and just sharing our passion for life through activity.
Fast and Female, an organisation dedicated to the empowerment of young women through sport, was the official organising partner. CBC Sports stepped up on this PA Day in Toronto and sponsored the event, to provide this event to girls who may not otherwise have access to this type of curriculum.
I cannot think of a better way to spend International Day of the Girl, a day dedicated to leaving the world a better place for the next generation. I walked away having learned a lot not just from the athletes I worked alongside, from the CBC staff but from each and every one of those young women who participated in the day.
If you want to help #SpreadTheLove you can head over to Fast and Female to check out their programming or how you might be able to get involved.
